ARTICLES CONCERNING WOMEN AND MANAGED HEALTH CARE

  • This website was developed to provide information concerning women and managed care.
  • This article addresses how the quality in women's health is being defined and measured through performance measurement and accreditation programs Several areas of women's health have been identified to determine the extent to which quality is being measured in each. These areas include comprehensive primary care, reproductive health care (including the prevention of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases), mental health care, care for chronic conditions, and the unique health needs of low-income women insured through Medicaid. Current mechanisms of measuring quality in managed care, with a particular focus on the extent to which they assess how well plans are meeting women's health care needs. Initiatives under development for measuring women¹s health quality within managed care are also discussed, followed by suggestions for areas on which to focus such efforts.

Quality in Women's Health: Taking the Measure of Managed Care
This was a speech presented by Margie Maxwell of CIGNA HealthCare of North Carolina Healthcare Leadership Council, Charlotte, N.C. on June 9, 1997. Ms. Maxwell speaks of how much more of an advantage woman have participating in managed care rather than the fee-for-service type insurance plans. While it is a biased presentation I thought it should be added to demonstrate the managed care side of the issue.

    Cigna's Health Plan concerning Women
There is increased awareness of issues related to sex and sex roles in health care, including discrimination in the enrollment of subjects in research and in access to clinical care. Explicit sex discrimination in health insurance is unjustifiable. Even so, men and women have different life spans and patterns of illnesses, so uniform coverage of health services may not serve both sexes equitably. It is important to consider the relation between sex and health insurance during an era of change in private and public insurance.

This article discusses the impact of managed care on women's health. The article discusses the problems with "gatekeeper" systems where a primary physician decides whether a woman needs additional testing etc. The article also discusses the lack of services provided by the managed care.

Women's Primary Care in Managed Care: Clinical and Provider Issues
Although managed care plans emphasize their commitment to preventive care, the extent to which preventing unintended pregnancy is included in their concept of such care is unclear. This paper reviews data on family planning and contraceptive coverage, the effect of managed care on traditional and community-based family planning providers, the specific challenges of preventing unintended pregnancy among adolescents, the state of quality measurement for this issue, and relevant public policy.

I thought adding a journal that was concerned with women's health would be helpful. This journal also dedicated an entire issues concerning women and managed care.

As we all know planned parenthood is an organization that provides women's reproductive health care. In many cases, this is one of the areas concening women's health where services are either not provided, such as pregnancy termination or only the basics services such as pap smears are offered. I decided to add this site to provide women with more information concerning reproductive health.

Even though this is a Canadian site, I felt that it offered a lot of information concerning women's health. This site also contains links to other women's health care site that may be useful.

Currently, this site is being developed but I thought it should be added to my web page. It contains basic information concerning managed care and HMOs. The site provides definitions and concepts of Medicaid, Medicare and managed care.
