HPO's and Physician Skills for MCO's

This folder contains information on provider owned or operated managed care organizations, and the management skills necessary for involvement in these organizations. Sources of information range from data bases to announcements for educational opporunities to advertisements for consulting services. A user of the WWW would not only find this an interesting collection of information on the topic, but a stimulating example of the diversity of types of information on the web. Users interested in educational opportunities in management or managed care skills would find this folder particularly helpful. In addition, some of the sites with a broader focus could serve as the jumping point to researching other topics in health care.

Documents

AMERICAN COLLEGE OF MANAGED CARE MEDICINE
This document contains the schedule and information for a one-day "college" sponsored by the American College of Managed Care Medicine, which, in turn, is run by the National Association of Managed Care Physicians. The purpose is to be informational for the intended audience of physicians interested in learning the principles of managed care. It is believed that at seminars such as this one, physicians will learn the skills necessary to become more active in the actual management of MCO's.
HealthCap Questions and Answers
This page is an interview with Robert B. McCray, the CEO of Health Cap, a managed care organization, on physician-centered networks, and their ability to be competitive in the current health care environment. Although the interview is concerned more with placing physicians at the core of MCO's, and not necessarily managing, it does address the expanding role of providers. However, the interview comes across more as a pitch for physicians to join Health Cap, rather than a true "informative" interview. This is no doubt attributable to the fact that its intended audience is probably physicians interested in joining the organization, and looking for more information.
Our Services
This page is bascially an advertisement from Dan Grauman Associates, Inc. about the services they can offer to different health care organizations. Among the services are providing structuring, planning, and implementation for integrated delivery systems such as hospital provider organizations, and provider organizations. Other services include consulting on pricing and payment systems, mergers, affiliations, and acquisitions, and strategic and business planning. This page is obviously geared towards MCO's who are looking for managerial guidence. Provider owned organizations would definitely find this site of interest.
Purchasers & Providers: The Future
This page is more or less a flyer for a symposium for physicians, nurses, health care administrators, and healthcare professionals who need the most current information on integrated delivery systems. It contains the program for the symposium with a complete list of speakers, including Peter Kongstvedt (!). Most of the sessions are advertised as offering tips on how to succeed in the managed care environment.
UNIVA Health Network
This document is the homepage for a provider-owned integrated health care delivery system in Kentucky. In addition to general statements about the goals and philosophy of the organization, there is additional information on providers (organized by location). The purpose of the page is to be informational to both patients and the health care community at large. This document serves as evidence that the movement towards provider-owned delivery systems has already started.

Sites

American Medical Specialty Organization, Inc. Home Page
This site is dedicated to offering to the provider community management services which will aid the health care provider's role in the managed health care marketplace. It is the aim of this site to be a resource for provders to turn to when seeking managed care issues. In particular, it contains information from managed care experts, and covers topics such as health care reform and legislation, ethics of managed care, and cost cutting ideas in healthcare. All of these topics would be pertinent to provider managed care organizations. I would rate this site as ***. It seems appropriate for the target audience, it has a comprehensive scope within the focus of managed care information for providers, and it is organized. The different topics are listed clearly with nice, attractive graphics. However, much of the information is subjective, in the form of opinions offered by the "experts". The plus is that the site is organized so that users can add their own comments to the message boards.
Association of Managed Care Providers
This site is concerned with the education and promotion of managed care by providers; in this case, dentists. The Association of Managed Care Providers is a non-profit organization, and this site contains information about the organization as well as more general information. The latter is provided by information from the association's newsletter. I would rate the site as ** because part of it is still under construction and it has, what would appear to be, a rather limited audience (dentists). However, it is well organized with a clear and short introduction and an organized listing of the different information links.
Health Administration page
This site is a joint project of Mercer Univerity Atlanta Computer Center and Georgia State University's Institute of Health Administration. It provides links to resources for either finding out about providers in managed care, or for such providers to search for management skills educational resources. The site contains seven main links, which then lead to several other links, so the accessible information from this site is quite extensive. For the purposes of this topic, information can be found on health care networks, and electronic journals which may provider further information. I would rate the site *** for it's comprehensive data access and neat appearance. In addition, it is well organized with a single introductory page from which more extensive information can be accessed. Its uses and purposes can be multiple with a good variety of sources. However, some of the search engines aren't too helpful as they lead back to sites where a search began.
HealthSeek - The Internet's Healthcare Career-Mart
This site is related in the sense that it is a resource for information concerning both the topic of physician owned/operated/managed managed care organizations and information supplied by and for such orgnizations. It includes a wealth of information organized in different manners. There is the HealthSeek Newsletter, a more detailed breakdown of medical resources, online journals, newsgroups, and health organizations, and there is also a breakdown by specialty of sites of interest. It is within these various "links" that the focus on provider managed care can be located. I would rate the site as ***** for being very organized, informative, extensive, and appropriate. It has many extensive uses, and the layout makes it quite easy to navigate.
NAMCP
This is a site operated by the National Association of Managed Care Physicians. The focus of the organization, and thus the page, is enhancing the ability of physicians and other health care professionals to succeed in managed care environments through education, research, and communication. The site contains the organization's mission statement, vision statement, membership, and benefits. In addition, there is information available on educational resources. I would rate the site as ** for its rather bland appearance and sparse number of links.
